Andromeda, rooted in Greek mythology, begins with her parents, King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia of Ethiopia. Cassiopeia’s boastful claim that Andromeda’s beauty surpassed that of the Nereids, sea nymphs, angered Poseidon, the god of the sea. To appease Poseidon’s wrath and save their kingdom from destruction, Cepheus and Cassiopeia were forced to sacrifice Andromeda by chaining her to a rock by the sea as an offering to the monstrous sea creature Cetus. Just as Cetus was about to devour Andromeda, the hero Perseus, returning from slaying Medusa, flew by on his winged horse Pegasus. Struck by her beauty, Perseus confronted and defeated Cetus, rescuing Andromeda. Perseus and Andromeda fell in love and eventually married. As a reward for her bravery and the trials she endured, Andromeda was placed among the stars as a constellation, where her story of sacrifice, heroism, and love continues to be told across the night sky.
